GM releases a universal OnStar rear-view mirror for cars of any make and model

GM releases a universal OnStar rear-view mirror for cars of any make and modelThe OnStar safety system that has been standard on many General Motors cars and trucks is now available for any vehicle, regardless of its maker. This is good news for people who bought an older car with a bad credit car loan, because they can have the same safety services that are available in newer vehicles.

OnStar For My Vehicle can be installed in nearly any car, according to The Detroit Free-Press. The rear-view mirror can be purchased and installed at Best Buy stores nationwide, and service plans start around $19 per month or $199 per year.

The news source reports that more than half of GM owners keep OnStar when the new car purchase promotion ends. Of the drivers who kept the services, 60 percent renewed at the end of their contracts.

Drivers who employ the service will have access to automatic crash response, navigation, stolen vehicle recovery and hands-free calling. The emergency alert button can contact help if the driver is in an accident or witnesses one.

Being able to make calls without taking your eyes from the road can help you avoid distracted driving, which was the cause of roughly 20 percent of all injury crashes in 2009, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports.
