The cheapest eco-friendly cars on the market

With the rising price of gas, many consumers are looking towards more fuel-efficient cars to help save a bit of money. But the problem is, these environmentally friendly cars, like electric or hybrid models, can be costly themselves. Luckily, MSN Autos has done the extra leg work for car shoppers and has compiled a list of the most affordable eco-conscious vehicles, which are often the best cars for bad credit.

The least expensive model on the list is the Hyundai Accent, a two-door compact car that gets 30 miles per gallon and retails for just shy of $10,000. When compared to a car that only gets 20 miles per gallon, Accent drivers could save nearly $900 per year in gas.

The 2011 Kia Rio ranked second, with a $12,295 price tag. Its 31-mile-per-gallon fuel efficiency (with an automatic transmission, 30 for manual) is impressive for the subcompact vehicle.

Other models on the list include the Smart Fortwo Coupe, Toyota Yaris, Ford Fiesta, Mazda 2, Hyundai Elantra, Kia Forte Eco, Honda Fit, Nissan Sentra, Fiat 500 and Ford Focus – all with a retail price of under $16,000.
